What Is It?

Q: So, what is Queerstock exactly?

A: The purpose of QueerStock is to celebrate the diversity and talent of "Queer" people. Since its emergence in the English language in the 16th century (related to the German quer, meaning "across, at right angle, diagonally or transverse"), queer has generally meant "strange", "unusual", or "out of alignment". It might refer to something suspicious or "not quite right", or to a person with mild derangement or who exhibits socially inappropriate behaviour. Or in simpler terms, not mainstream or what some would consider normal. In this context, we all have something "Queer" in us, and so QueerStock reaches beyond the just the LGBT community.

In short it is a music festival to celebrate what is different in all of us.

QueerStock will be an outdoor music festival, done in the spirit of the historic Woodstock Music Festival to celebrate the diversity in the "Queer" community. The concept in this form grew from the very obvious need to have a party after the massively successful first Pride Parade hosted by Pride Durham, Durham Region, Ontario. Patrons and organizers alike agreed that a party at the end of the parade was needed to keep the celebration going. Pretty much at the same time Glenn Blake and Mike May had similar visions of a live music festival after the parade. Pride Durham's board of directors liked the idea, and agreed to back the concept.
